Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
A veteran of sixteen (16) Major League Baseball seasons after signing with the San Diego Padres as a seventeen (17) year old, Roberto Alomar would claim the Gold Glove Award on ten (10) occasions throughout his career to go along with twelve (12) all-star appearances and four (4) Silver Slugger Awards. Named the MVP of the 1992 American League Championship Series and a two-time World Series champion, happening in back-to-back years of 1992 and 1993, offered here is this pair of cleats worn by Alomar as a member of the Blue Jays during their World Series championship season of 1993 that are signed and attributed to the 1993 MLB All-Star Game in Baltimore. Puma brand kicks in Toronto's white and blue colourway, number "12" patches have been sewn on over the outside part of the ankle and heel of both shoes. Sporting printed Puma logos over the tongue and heel of each cleat, which feature metal spikes over the bottoms, each shoe retains its original laces and insoles. Also still displaying factory production sample lables over each insole on the interior which have had "RA" penned to them in black marker ink, both list a size of "UK 8" as well as style information and a manufacture date. Signed by Alomar over the heel on the outside of the left shoe with a thin blue marker ink signature that displays with some fading from age, an inscription reading "To Jimmy, All My Best" is found above in matching ink that displays in the same condition. Also having had "93 All Star Shoes" added over the inside of the right heel in the same blue ink which is once again in the same condition, both cleats show good game-wear via number of marks, scuffs and other abrasions while the bottoms of each still show dirt caked into the spikes.
For the batting gloves, made by Cooper and also in a black, lime green and blue colourway, brand logo patches have been added over the backside of each hand while Alomar identifier patches featuring his facsimile signature are found over both wrists. Showing no obvious game-wear (some wear is seen from age), both gloves remain in excellent condition overall.
Finally, the last item included with the cleats and gloves is a letter from Gord Ash, then the Assistant GM of the Blue Jays, that was sent to Alomar pertaining to a copy of a cheque that was issued to Roberto to cover his 1992 signing bonus. The letter and photocopy of the cheque are in good condition with fold lines and light creases present while Ash has signed the letter itself with a black pen ink signature.
