Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
A product of the QMJHL's Cornwall Royals and helping the club to a Memorial Cup championship during the 1971-72 season of play, Richard Brodeur would be drafted 72nd overall by the New York Islanders at the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. Choosing the route of the rival league, the World Hockey Association instead of the National Hockey League, Brodeur would play seven (7) years with the Quebec Nordiques, winning an AVCO Cup in 1976-77. Finally breaking into the NHL for the 1979-80 season upon the folding of the WHA, Brodeur would go on to play a total of 385 games in the league with the likes of New York, Vancouver and Hartford. Offered here, we present this Islanders jersey worn by "King Richard" during his brief stint with the club in 1979-80. A mesh construction offering with knit inserts made by W.A Goodman & Sons, a label displaying a size "50" designation from the brand is affixed to the inner collar along with an additional one alongside it from the Bill Vanderburg Company. Decorated over the front of the garment with a familiar Islanders team crest that has been administered in a layered tackle twill style, the patch worn by the Islanders commemorating the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Games during the season is in place over the left shoulder. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Brodeur's number "30" in dual layer blue-over-orange tackle twill numerals, "Brodeur" is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Void of a fight strap on the interior, the jersey displays with just light game-wear due to its limited use/wear via a puck mark over the left sleeve.
