Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

Entering the NHL a season before the crosstown rival New York Rangers, the New York Americans played home games at Madison Square Garden, and were known to fans as the Amerks. This ticket stub for the inaugural season Americans from 1925-26 for a match against the Canadiens on Feb 28, 1926 is one of the earliest NHL stubs we have ever offered, and it is accompanied by the matching line-up for the game. Played at Mount Royal Arena, as the Habs didn't begin play at the Forum until the next season, in 1926-27, the approx 2" x 2" stub lists the opponents and date along with the seat number and purchase price of $2.20 (just under $40.00 in 2024 currency). The 5 1/2" x 8" line-up is a single sheet on mustard cardstock, with the date listed along with "Referee; Our old FRIEND JOE MALONE". Legendary HOFers taking part in the century-old match included Howie Morenz (misspelled "Morentz"), Aurel Joliat, Bullet Joe Simpson and Billy Burch. Both the stub and line-up sport numerous creases, with the line-up folded thrice at one time. There is also tape residue on the reverse of the stub and writing on the reverse of the line-up. As mentioned, we have rarely seen stubs or line-ups for prominent teams this early, and with tickets now extremely hot in the hobby, we expect considerable bidding. As a point of reference, in 2023 we sold a first season 1926-27 Chicago Black Hawks full ticket for just north of $16,000.00 including the buyer's premium.
