Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Trailing only Gordie Howe for the most all-time points at the time of his retirement in 1981, Phil Esposito secured over 700 goals throughout his HOF career, with selection to the NHL First All-Star Team six times. A veteran of 1282 games played in his National Hockey League career who won a pair of Stanley Cup championships, a pair of Hart Memorial Trophies and five (5) Art Ross Trophies, Esposito would be the first NHL player to eclipse the 100 point plateau. Helping the Bruins their second Stanley Cup in three (3) years during the 1971-72 season, Esposito was recognized with the 1972 edition of the Lou Marsh Award that is presented annually to Canada's most outstanding athlete. Offered here, is the award that was presented to Esposito in 1972. A black coloured wooden award that measures roughly 12" tall for its effort, a plaque displaying an image of Lou Marsh is affixed over the front of the piece, which also reads "The Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy - Awarded to Canada's Outstanding Athlete of the Year". Also engraved with "Phil Esposito - Hockey - 1972" along the bottom of the plaque and flanked on either side by small metal maple leaves (one is missing on the left side), the award displays in overall good condition with some edge and corner wear present to the wooden parts and surface wear to the metal plaque. Hailing from Espostio's personal collection, the pieces comes accompanied by his signed LOA.
