Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A key cog in the wheel that helped Team Canada overcome the Soviet Union at the 1972 Summit Series between the two (2) hockey superpowers, Phil Esposito would record a total of thirteen (13) points over the course of the eight (8) games and serve as Canada's inspirational leader during the series, giving an impassioned speech after the Game Four (4) loss in Vancouver. Offered here, is this collection of 1972 Canada-Russia Series memorabilia that hails directly from Esposito's personal collection.
Starting off, we have a stick signed by twenty-four (24) members of Team Canada. A full-sized CCM Professional Heritage model with “Limited Edition of 500” over the upper shaft, all those that have signed, including Esposito as well as his brother Tony and Dennis Hull, Don Awrey, Bill White, Jocelyn Guevremont, Ed Johnston, Marcel Dionne, Ron Ellis, Brian Glennie, Brad Park, Jean-Paul Parise, Dale Tallon, Rod Gilbert, Rick Martin, Red Berenson, Stan Mikita, Serge Savard, Pat Stapleton, Rod Seiling, Jean Ratelle, Yvan Cournoyer, Pete Mahovlich and Guy Lapointe. All having signed in red over the forehand side of the shaft, the signatures all present well, along with the stick, which is in good condition but has a few marks throughout from age and handling.
Next, included in an unframed copy of Douglas R. Laird's lithograph titled "Remember the Goal". Depicting a pond hockey version of Henderson's memorable goal with 34 seconds remaining that gave Canada a 6-5 win in the eighth and final game of the Summit Series, the team's third straight win after dropping the first game in Moscow to fall behind 1-3-1, the piece measures roughly 30" x 22" and is serial numbered "450/500 CE" (celebrity addition). Showing wear including foxing throughout as well as edge/corner wear, the piece is signed by Laird in pencil and is accompanied by its original COA.
Finally, the rest of the lot includes various lapel pins, a "Hockey Stars of the USSR" watch (non functioning), a coin of Valeri Kharlamov and a medal presented to Phil for the 30th anniversary of the series that shows some wear and includes its original ribbon. All hailing from Esposito's personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany the lot.
