Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Playing a year of junior hockey with the St. Cathrines Teepees in the Ontario Hockey Association and breaking into the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks during the 1963-64 season, Phil Esposito would play three (3) and a half seasons in the Windy City before being traded to the Boston Bruins. Finding his stardom in Beantown and spending a total of 625 games in Boston's black and yellow uniform over the better part of nine (9) seasons during the late-1960s and throughout the 1970s, Esposito and the Bruins would win Stanley Cup championships in both 1970 and 1972 while Phil himself would claim hardware including the Art Ross Trophy (x5 - 1969, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974) and Hart Memorial Trophy (x2 - 1969 and 1974). Also named to the NHL's 1st All-Star Team on six (6) occasions (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974), Esposito would finish his esteemed NHL career as a member of the New York Rangers, closing out his time in the league with a total of 717 goals and trailing only Gordie Howe in both career goals and total points at the time of his retirement, Esposito would be enshrined into the hallowed hall of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.
Helped by Phil and his team leading forty-three (43) goals and ninety-nine (99) points overall during the regular season, the 1969-70 Boston Bruins would knock off the New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks and St. Louis Blues to claim Boston's first Stanley Cup since 1941 in their first Finals appearance since 1958. Leading the team in goals (13), assists (14) and points (27) during the playoffs, offered here, and hailing from his personal collection, is this spectacular 1970 Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship 14K gold and diamond ring that was presented to Phil Esposito. Measuring out to approximately a size twelve (12) and weighing roughly thirty-five (35) grams, the tableau features a single diamond set into a black onyx stone while "Boston Bruins World Champions" is spelt out in raised gold letters around the bezel. "P. Esposito" appears engraved into a gold banner on the right shank above a raised gold Boston Bruins spoked "B" logo while Phil's number "7" is stamped into a raised gold puck underneath that. On the left shank, "1970" is engraved into a banner above a raised gold Stanley Cup in relief surrounded by banners with the results of the Bruins' three playoff series, with these results still quite vivid despite the rings age though the results of the series against the Black Hawks have worn a bit over time. Stamped over the inner band with "Balfour 14K", the ring remains in overall excellent condition for its age and has been well preserved throughout the years while displaying signs of wear including a few marks to the interior band along with some scratches and small edge dings to the outer band and shanks.
A rare opportunity to claim an important Stanley Cup ring worn by a one of the greatest to ever play the game of hockey in the NHL, the ring comes accompanied by an LOA signed by Esposito. Please note that this incredible item may be subject to a silent reserve.
