Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
The man credited with bringing the “butterfly” style of netminding to the forefront, Patrick Roy remains the only player in history to garner the prestigious Conn Smythe Trophy an impressive three times. Traded from the Montreal Canadiens to the Colorado Avalanche in December of 1995, Roy would post a record of 16 wins and 6 losses during the 1996 Stanley Cup Playoffs as Colorado would claim Lord Stanley's Cup during their first season in "The Centennial State". One of the greatest goalies of all-time and traded to the Colorado Avalanche from the Habs on December 6th, 1995, offered here is this Avs jersey worn by Roy during the clubs inaugural season of 1995-96, in which they won the Stanley Cup over the Florida Panthers that summer, which has also been conclusively photo-matched to only his fifth road game with the club on January 6th, 1996 and is also attributed to being the first road jersey he ever wore with them.
A mesh construction garment made by Starter that features both NHL Center Ice Authentic Collection and size "58-G" labels affixed to the inner collar, both the Starter and NHL shield crests have been embroidered into the reverse hem while the interior retains its original fight strap, which shows some pilling as well as rusting in the snaps, and sports a small washing instructions tag inside the right side seam near the hem. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a familiar Avalanche team crest that features both textured and embroidered details throughout its entirety, matching alternate logo patches have been added atop of both shoulders and the sleeves plus verso have been styled with Roy's familiar number "33" in stacked tri-layer glacier twill numerals. Having had "Roy" spelt out in single layer white glacier twill letters that have been placed in a gentle arch across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse, the jersey shows good game-wear throughout its entirety including puck and stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves (which have been widened with extra material to Roy's liking), light red post paint transfer marks in the white stripe near the right elbow, unrepaired cuts/holes under the front crest and over the area above the left elbow and finally, pilling and fraying on the interior. Additionally, the jersey has been twice signed by Roy, once with a black marker ink signature through the front crest that displays well and once through the top of the second "3" on the reverse with a blue marker ink signature that shows with some fading from age. A Frozen Pond hologram has been affixed to the bottom of the signed second "3" on the reverse also.
Regarding the photo-matches, the jersey is conclusively photo-matched to Getty Image #894047704 (January 6th, 1996 vs Toronto - Roy's 5th Avalanche road game) to the large puck mark through the front crest as well as to the white coloured mark in the maroon section just above the right elbow and to the loose maroon threads at the right side of the collar which appear underneath his throat dangler. Additionally, photos on Getty from Roy's first ever road game with the Avalanche on December 11th, 1995, also against the Maple Leafs in Toronto, appear to show a match to the same loose maroon threads at the right side of the collar, specifically in Getty Image #824736780 (December 11th, 1995 vs Toronto) but the image is not clear enough to call a definitive match. Furthermore, the same image also appears to show the extra bit of silver stitching that extends into the blue layer at the bottom of the second "3" on the right sleeve but due to clarity issues, we are not calling it a definitive photo-match.
