The finest and most desirable Patrick Roy game-worn jersey to ever hit the auction block, this one will have the most serious jersey and Patrick Roy collectors drooling and rightfully will garner many oooohs and ahhhhhs! Worn by arguably one of the greatest goaltender to ever play the game in his first season in the National Hockey League, the white knit CCM Canadiens home jersey has numerous marks and characteristics which help us confirm that it is indeed from Patrick's initial NHL campaign and the earliest Roy gamer ever offered. After appearing in one period against Winnipeg during the '84-85 season, Roy arrived in Montreal to stay at the beginning of '85-86, having backstopped the Sherbrooke Canadiens to the AHL Calder Cup championship in the spring of 1985.
A CCM tag in the neck is sewn over an "85 01" tag while a CCM* patch is stitched to the rear hem. The jersey has the long nameplate which the team wore in the '84-85 season and first part of '85-86. The placement of the numbers on the arms, higher up and closer to the red shoulder bar, is also consistent to those two seasons. Other video and photos from the latter part of the '85-86 season show Roy wearing a shirt with a short nameplate and the arm numbers lower on the sleeves. As for additional game wear, two dime-size team repairs are in the white on the front, between the crest and the red stripe while a slightly smaller circular repair is in the red of the right cuff. A few laundered black marks appear on the sleeves with a few miscellaneous snags throughout. As an added bonus the tackle twill section which the loop-style fight strap is sewn onto was autographed in blue sharpie by Patrick, who added his number "33". Puck marks on the upper left chest area of this jersey can be matched to a January 11th 1986 game against Edmonton and a January 25th 1986 game versus Toronto. Both games will be included on DVDs. We also have an included numeric image which matches a black puck mark in the red tackle twill "C", just beneath the "H".
It was later that rookie season that Roy began to forge his clutch playoff performance reputation, offering heroic and miraculous play in helping the Canadiens recapture Lord Stanley's coveted trophy. Patrick was the best of a generation and this unique treasure is for those who appreciate the best of things. Worn by Patrick during his first Conn Smythe trophy winning season. Good luck in acquiring this extraordinary, one-of-a-kind jersey. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve. Comes with a Classic Auctions LOA.
