Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Playing his junior hockey with JYP in his native Finland before coming over to North America for a pair of seasons with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, Olli Maatta would be drafted 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and go on to help Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. Also having suited up in the National Hockey League for the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings, Maatta would help his native Finland to a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Offered here, we present this photo-matched Penguins jersey worn by Maatta on December 20th, 2016 against the New York Rangers in which the Pens wore a special set of "Jerseys for Warmth" sweaters to benefit the Dollar Energy Fund. Made by Reebok and sporting a lone size "56" label affixed to the inner collar, logo crests for both the NHL and Reebok adorn the front and reverse necklines respectively. Decorated over the front of the jersey with a Penguins team crest that features embroidered details throughout, the club's 50th anniversary crest that was worn throughout the season is in place over the right breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Maatta's number "3" in dual layer tackle twill numerals, "Maatta" is spelt out in single layer yellow twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Sporting a game specific team tag sewn inside the reverse hem and accompanied by a Penguins COA, the jersey shows game-wear via stick marks through the front crest, board burns over both sleeves and a small red coloured board paint transfer over the right forearm. Also sporting some small loose threads and frays on the interior, the jersey is photo-matched with Getty Image #630383182 (December 20th, 2016 vs New York) to the stick marks in the team crest as well as the loose white thread at the bottom of it also.
