Introducing changes to the game now commonplace while building the PCHA in the early-1910s with his brother Frank, Lester Patrick later served as the longstanding guru of the New York Rangers, first as head coach, later as general manager, and finally, as vice president of Madison Square Garden. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a typed letter signed by the 1947 HOF inductee, along with a 1939-40 team-signed New York Rangers team photo. The 8 ½” x 11” correspondence is on MSG letterhead and dated “March 11, 1941”, with Patrick mentioning the sending of a Rangers team photo “under separate cover”. The black ink signature is flawless! The 8” x 10” glossy team photo has been signed by 18 including Patrick, along with fellow HOF inductees Hextall, Colville, Smith, Pratt, Coulter, coach Frank Boucher and Lynn Patrick. Lester would pass away in the summer of 1960 at age 76.
The letter exhibits just fold lines and light toning, with a pair of punched holes over the top section for binder insertion. A notation over the reverse state’s that this letter was received by Hamlyn shortly after being sent, in March of 1941. The additional signers on the team photo include Watson, Shibicky, Hiller, MacDonald, Colville, Heller, Pike, Kerr Westerby (trainer) and Muzz Patrick. The fountain pen signatures display nicely, with a few small creases and surface indentations to the photo. There is also typed text over the reverse, including “photo sent by Frank Boucher – Dec 30 1940”.
