Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Hailing from the NHL Goal Puck Program, we have a quartet of goal pucks dating from the program's final season of 1973-74. Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. For the first puck, used by Joey Johnston to score the California Golden Seals' 54th goal of the 1973-74 season at Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena on December 5th, 1973 vs Atlanta. The goal was Johnston's eleventh (11th) goal of the year and scored short handed as the Golden Seals and Flames battled to a 3-3 tie. The next puck was used by Tony Featherstone to score the Minnesota North Stars' 65th goal of the 1973-74 season at Metropolitan Sports Center on December 6th, 1973 vs Toronto. The goal was Featherstone's fifth (5th) goal of the season and Minnesota's only marker in a 4-1 loss that night to the Maple Leafs. Third, is a puck that was used by Richard Lemieux to score the Vancouver Canucks' 102nd goal of the 1973-74 season at Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on January 8th, 1974 vs St. Louis. The goal was Lemieux's third (3rd) of the year and Vancouver's only goal in a 3-1 loss that night to the Blues. Lastly, is a puck used by Pierre Plante to score the St. Louis Blues' 196th goal of the 1973-74 season at Chicago Stadium on March 31st, 1974 vs Chicago. The goal was Plante's 26th of the year and was scored on the power play as the Blues and Black Hawks played to a 2-2 tie. In a variety of conditions and presenting with dirty logos/labels over either side but still remaining legible, its worth mentioning that all four (4) pucks included feel oily to the touch. All hailing from the personal collection of legendary journalist Frank Brown, a Classic Auctions LOA will accompany the lot.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
