Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Carving out one of the best careers for any goaltender in NHL history, and elevating the Devils to one of the league's premier teams throughout his full 20 seasons in the crease, Martin Brodeur came to New Jersey by utter happenstance. At the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Brodeur was seen as the 3rd best goaltender by analysts, with Trevor Kidd ranked #1 and Felix Potvin #2. With an aging Mike Vernon backstopping Calgary, Flames management was seeking to secure Kidd at the draft, but having the 20th pick in the first round, they believed the choice netminder would be snapped up by another club. Approaching the Devils who had the 11th pick, the teams made a deal, with Calgary to receive the Devils' 11th pick along with their 32nd, and New Jersey to receive the Flames 20th pick as well as their 24th and 29th. Picking a so-far unchosen Kidd in the 11th spot, the Devils chose Brodeur as the 20th pick, and the rest as they say, is history. Would the Devils have chosen Kidd if they had kept their 11th slot? We'll never know. From the superstar netminder's swan song, where he signed a tryout contract with the St. Louis Blues in November of 2014, and saw action in just 7 games with the Gateway City squad before retiring, we offer a signed and photo-matched Blues jersey worn by Brodeur in 2014-15.
A Reebok model with 58+ "Goalie Style" labeling affixed to the collar and "1st" handwritten, NHL and Reebok crests grace the front and reverse necklines respectively. Styled with the classic blue note team crest with embroidered detailing, "30" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in tri-layered tackle twill, with "Brodeur" across the affixed nameplate in single blue twill. Brodeur has signed the reverse "3" in silver paint pen, with the signature blending into the material. There are details of the jersey's use handwritten to the fight strap, including "12/4 @ Nashville 1st Period, 12/6 @ NYI, 12/13 @ Colorado, 12/18 @ LA, 12/20 @ San Jose, 12/23 @ Colorado, 12/30 @ Nashville & 1/2 @ Anaheim". Photo-matched to Brodeur's first game for St Louis on Dec 4, 2014 and specifically during the first period as listed on the fight strap, we should note that no photo-matches were found for those other games listed on the fight strap, and it is unknown if the jersey was worn in any portions of these games as well (Brodeur is listed on NHL.com as playing a total of 7 games for the Blues including 2 homes contests and 5 away games. The fight strap lists a total of 8 away games, including the 5 that he is officially listed as playing in according to NHL.com, as well as 3 games we would have served as back-up on the bench). Sporting just light use, there are a few small marks over the front and sleeves. Getty Image #460198350 (December 4, 2014) has been matched to the small black mark to the right of the number "30" on the right sleeve. A few documents from Resolution Photomatching are included, with one photo from Dec 4, 2014 showing two threading particularities to the team crest.
