Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
One of the greatest goaltenders in NHL history, who set numerous records throughout his legendary
career, including his unparalleled longevity and consistent excellence between the pipes. Yes,
we're talking about Martin Brodeur. Over his remarkable 22-season career, Brodeur became the
all-time leader in wins, shutouts, and games played by a goaltender. In the 1996-97 season,
Brodeur peaked, finishing with the best goals-against average of his career, an outstanding
1.88 and winning his first of five William M. Jennings trophy that very season.
This particular Heaton game-used stick from that season shows nice game wear, including good wear to the tape at the bottom of the blade, as one
would expect from a goaltender who battled as hard as Brodeur. Notable stamps on the shaft
read “M. BRODEUR” and “02, DEC, 1996,” confirming the stick’s use during the 1996-97
campaign. The original tape jobs remains securely in place on the knob and blade of the stick, with
“Pit” written in black marker over the knob marking the opponent of the game that this stick was used in. Brodeur’s bold signature, beautifully preserved in silver marker, sits prominently at the center of the forehand of the blade, just over the black tape. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
These sticks come from the personal collection of Lou Nolan, the legendary voice of the
Philadelphia Flyers. Nolan has been a fixture with the Flyers since the team’s inception in 1967,
starting as a press box assistant before becoming the team’s public address announcer in
1972—a role he’s held ever since. For over five decades, he has been calling plays for Flyers
hockey, his voice guiding us through some of the franchise’s most iconic moments. This of
course includes their back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975. These sticks,
personally gifted to Nolan by some of the NHL’s biggest legends, reflect the relationships he’s
built over his storied career and the trust and admiration he’s earned within the NHL community.
