Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
One of the best remembered Stanley Cup championships due to the promise publicly professed by Mark Messier of a guaranteed victory in Game 6 of the 1994 semifinals, the Rangers team captain followed through, scoring a hat trick including the game winner for a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. The Blueshirts would go on to win Game 7, before defeating Vancouver in the finals, with Messier again scoring the paramount Game 7 Cup-clinching winning goal. From that remarkable championship era, we offer a pair of skates worn by Messier with New York in circa 1993-94.
Originally purchased by our consignor at a Rangers auction, these CCM Tacks VT 652 models with Tuuk Plus blade holders and "11" handwritten to the underside are the type of models used by Messier briefly at the beginning of the 1992-93 season, but with different blade holders and no visible reinforced tendon guards. The Moose is shown wearing another model of skates for the rest of the season on images found, and throughout the 1993-94 season, he is wearing this model of CCM Tacks skates, but again using two different models of blade holders during the season; the Prolite 3 blade holders (which came factory mounted on the skates from CCM) and the model of Tuuk blade holders currently mounted to the skates. Starting in the following 1994-95 season, Messier is not shown in images found wearing this model of skates again.
Sporting customized/reinforced tendon guards with the customizations done slightly different on each skate, the left skate had two rivets added to the inside back portion of the blade holder, and there is evidence that a former different holder was affixed to the skate and placed differently. We should also note that the left skate has its white portions more of an off-white, and not as bright white as on the right skate. Regarding condition, there are marks and cuts to each toe along with wear, cracks and rubbing to the leather accents, with additional marks and cuts to the blade holders. There is also paint transfer to the blade holder and plastic ankle guard on the right skate.
