Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Few players in NHL history commanded the ice quite like Mark Messier. A six-time Stanley Cup
champion and two-time Hart Trophy winner, Messier was known for his leadership, toughness,
and skill. The 1991-92 season was Messier’s first year with the New York Rangers, ending one
of the most legendary eras in hockey history and beginning a new one. Mess would go on to
eventually captain the New York Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in 54 years in 1994,
reaffirming his already established legacy as one of hockey’s greatest players.
Messier used this exact Louisville TPS stick, which exhibits heavy game wear throughout the
shaft. The name “Messier” is printed on the front of the shaft just under his number "11" appearing in light black marker, the stick still retains Messier’s original black tape job on both the knob and the blade. He signed this stick twice: once at
the bottom of the shaft and again on the heel side of the blade. Both signatures are in black
marker, with the one on the blade being slightly faded over time. "11-2-91" is written in black
marker on the backside of the shaft, just above the blade, providing the date of use for the stick.
On this date the Rangers met with the Flyers, and this piece of lumber was possibly put to use
by Messier in their 4-2 win at home. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
These sticks come from the personal collection of Lou Nolan, the legendary voice of the
Philadelphia Flyers. Nolan has been a fixture with the Flyers since the team’s inception in 1967,
starting as a press box assistant before becoming the team’s public address announcer in
1972—a role he’s held ever since. For over five decades, he has been calling plays for Flyers
hockey, his voice guiding us through some of the franchise’s most iconic moments. This of
course includes their back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 1974 and 1975. These sticks,
personally gifted to Nolan by some of the NHL’s biggest legends, reflect the relationships he’s
built over his storied career and the trust and admiration he’s earned within the NHL community.
