Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Perhaps the greatest player the game of hockey and the National Hockey League has ever seen, Mario Lemieux needs no introduction and during the 1980s and 1990s was the only one capable of holding a candle with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and his greatness. Returning to the Pittsburgh lineup during the 2000-01 campaign after retiring three (3) years earlier, Lemieux posted 76 points in 43 games played and was selected to the ninth (9th) NHL All-Star Game of his career. An inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and finally retiring from the National Hockey League for good following the 2005-06 campaign, offered here is this Team North America jersey donned by Lemieux during the 2001 NHL All-Star Game in Denver, Colorado. Made by CCM and featuring both "Made in Canada" and size "58" labels affixed to the inner collar, the logos of both the NHL and NHLPA have been embroidered into the reverse hem and a CCM logo patch is in place over the reverse neckline. Featuring an NHL shield crest over the front that features embroidered details, both Canadian flag and Pittsburgh Penguins patches have been added atop of the left and right shoulders while the all-important 2001 NHL All-Star Game event patch is in place over the right breast. Sporting the distinguished captain's "C" over the left breast, the front and verso have been styled with Lemieux's number "66" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals while "Lemieux" is spelt out in single layer white tackle twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Retaining its fight strap on the interior, which has had a serial number patch numbered "AAA275" sewn over the top of it that denotes the jersey as being one of the five (5) made up for Lemieux to wear during the contest (one for each period, one for the team photo-shoot and one for warm-ups), the jersey shows wear through sweat staining around the collar and good pilling on the interior plus pilling at the end of the right cuff. Additionally, there is a small spot stain over the lower front. Signed by Lemieux through the middle of the first "6" on the reverse with a black marker ink signature that displays without issue, an NHLPA COA will accompany the piece.
