Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
His 2nd best career points season and 8th best in NHL history, Mario Lemieux led the NHL in both goals (70) and points (168) in 1987-88, while also capturing the Art Ross, Hart Memorial and Lester B. Pearson trophies. Recognizing his sheer dominance and leadership in this, just his fourth NHL season, and with current captain Dan Frawley sidelined by an injury, coach Pierre Creamer bestowed the captain's "C" on Magnificent Mario in December of 1987. Lemieux would continue on as Pens captain minus seasons he was injured or in which he played very little, right up until his retirement and the anointment of Sidney Crosby. From that unbelievable standout NHL season for Lemieux in 1987-88, we offer a signed stick used by the superstar which, amazingly, has been photo-matched. A Titan TPM 1020 model with "Lemieux" stamped to the top edge of the lower shaft, the original black tape is on the handle and blade (a couple strands are missing near the toe of the blade). There is also a factory code stamped to the underside of the shaft. Nice game-use is exhibited with wear to the taped section of blade and marks and additional wear to the shaft. Lemieux has signed the backside of the lower shaft in black marker, adding "Bonne Chance" and "66". Getty Image #1411297912 (undated) which shows Lemieux wearing the captain's "C", has been matched to and clearly shows the unique pattern of the black lines on the lower front shaft as well as the placement/details of the darker piece of wood which starts at the middle of the top edge near the heel and continues into the blade. From one of the greatest points seasons in NHL history, to find a signed photo-matched stick used by an all-time legend is a thing of hobby lore.
