Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
The Comeback. These two Mario Lemieux signed framed photo displays highlight Le Magnifique’s return to NHL action with the Pittsburgh Penguins midway through the 2000-01 season and the impact he had on that season’s playoffs. The date, “December 27, 2000”, displayed on the bottom left of the signed photo picturing Lemieux heading out to the ice signifies Super Mario’s first game since 1997. Mario placed a big silver paint pen autograph on the left side of the 16” x 20” photo, which has two hologram stickers affixed to the bottom right corner and is mounted in a black matte in a big 19” x 26” black plastic frame, which has a crack on the verso of the bottom left corner that does not diminish its display. Mario made the impact of his return known immediately and he added to his legend in the 2001 playoffs when he scored late in the third period of Game 6 against the Buffalo Sabres to help force a seventh game, with Pittsburgh ultimately winning the series. Lemieux’s thick silver paint pen autograph is sprawled across his black hockey pants on the 14” x 11” photo of him celebrating that game-tying goal. A hologram sticker is affixed to the bottom right of the image, which is displayed in a black matte. A series of three insets at the bottom of the matte include a Penguins jersey pin, a description of the significance of the May 8, 2001 goal, and a Penguins logo pin. The photo is mounted in a 19” x 23” black wood frame that has a crack along the raised left side along with a few nicks that do not diminish its display. A COA is included on the reverse.
