Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

A trio of 19th century ice skate pairs are available, highlighted by rare racing models along with specimens made from repurposed steel files. First, we have a pair of circa-1870s racing or possibly “touring” skates, with extended 14" blades and small circular termination tips, with the blades featuring evenly drilled holes to lessen the weight, with small wooden platform bases that include what appears to be much of the original leather strapping. Heavy use is shown, with wear throughout including pitting to the blades. The file skates feature closed-end curling-tip blades with filing grooves visible, and sport a length of 13 ½”. Produced mid-century and sporting no maker’s marks, the wooden bases show heavy wear, with three thick leather straps to each skate (laces were added much later), as well as pitting to the blades. The final pair hail from the latter half of the century, and are solid metal with mounted step plates. 12” in length with obtuse-angle blades produced by a blacksmith and designed to grip the ice, there are no maker’s marks, with wear throughout including pitting. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection, with this the second offering from the vast and comprehensive grouping.
