The first NHL team to represent The Big Apple, the New York Americans joined the league in 1925 and operated until 1940-41, with a final season as the Brooklyn Americans, in 1941-42. Known for the amazingly patriotic red, white and blue sweaters proudly donned by the Amerks – with the design one of the most appealing for any sport, we offer a period specimen from the early-1930s that according to the original owner, was acquired from the family of a player who went to training camp for the Americans but never made the team. Sporting an Alex Taylor cloth label to the inside seam – with this matching a similar Americans wool we sold previously, “New York” and “Americans” is appliqued in felt to the chest, with 13 small felt stars affixed over both the upper chest and verso. Measuring-out to roughly a size 40, there is no reverse number and no signs of the sweater ever possessing one – with this important as it is believed that players trying-out for the Amerks would wear an un-numbered sweater like the offered specimen, and earn a number once they made the team and joined the roster. Showing just very light wear as one would expect given its history, the wool treasure displays gorgeously and shows no damage. One of the most attractive sweaters ever offered, this depression-era finery screams “Manhattan” and would utterly please even the most discerning of collectors, including Uncle Sam!
