Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/18/2019
Originating directly from the family of superstar Herb Carnegie, we have an important stick used by the Black Ace during his career in the 1950s, along with a "Porcupine Old Timers" stick from 1962 signed by Carnegie and others, and a pair of original mid-1960s photos picturing the Toronto native. The circa-1950s game-used stick is a Hespeler professional, void of the fiberglass covering over the blade that’s usually found on post-1960 models, with faded but visible “Carnegie” handwritten over the upper shaft. Black tape remains over the knob and cracked blade, with heavy use exhibited, with numerous black marks over the heel section and lower shaft. A piece of masking tape has also been added to the upper shaft at some point, with “Dad’s stick” handwritten. An LOA from the Carnegie family will accompany, and we should note that the stick may have been used post career.
The Porcupine Old Timers Ice Master stick has “6” stamped over the upper shaft and “175” handwritten, with the blade decorated with large black ink letters that state “Porcupine Old Timers – Sunday February 4th 1962”, with “McIntyre Arena” beneath. Showing moderate game-use with marks to the lower shaft and wear to the underside of the blade, approx 29 have signed in varying inks including Carnegie, along with Chas Brown (Timmins Buffalo Ankerites mgr), Frank Huggins, Samuel (Sammy) Fasano, Frank Pearce, Lynd? Huggins, Bill Stanley, Fred Quesnel (manager) and many others. The photos are both 8” x 10”, and they picture Herb on-ice in his Porcupine jersey, with ink notations over each reverse, along with stamps from “The Daily Press – Timmins, Ontario”. One photo pictures Herb with another player, with both listed over the reverse along with “Back to Timmins for Old Timers Game”. Both photos exhibit moderate wear, with a bit of creasing and toning.
