Canada’s 2014 Olympic gold medal-winning men’s hockey team won each of its six games in Russia to deliver one of the most dominant championship performances in modern elite international hockey history. Canada defeated Sweden 3-0 in the gold medal final in Sochi, outscoring its opponents 17-3 to defend the Olympic title it won on home ice four years earlier in Vancouver. Forward Matt Duchene’s Team Canada game-worn third jersey with the Sochi 2014 patch sewn on the right rear hem is from a 6-0 win against Austria on February 14. Game wear includes a small diagonal mark in the middle of the gold maple leaf on the left sleeve, a thin black mark through the middle of the “9” on the back.
More game wear shows in a couple of board burns on the lower sleeve near the cuff and a few marks both the right and left sides of the back. The COC patch is glued on the right sleeve and IIHF tagging is sewn in the back of the neck, which displays screened Nike logo, size 60 and “Made in Canada”. There are 12 gold maple leafs on the inside edge of the front collar, behind the screened faux-tie-front-laces. The jersey has its fight strap, and Nike's inventory bar code heat-pressed into the inner rear hem.
Inspired by memorable vintage Team Canada jerseys, this black third jersey was designed to inspire Canada’s Olympians to win again. The advanced polyester/spandex fabric used makes for a remarkably lightweight jersey which has an approximate weight of 448 grams and is made from 73 percent recycled polyester as part of Nike's commitment to produce performance apparel with reduced environmental impact. Each jersey is made from up to 17 recycled plastic water bottles! The fight strap is intact and a long laundry instruction fly tag is sewn into the inside of the left seam. A glued-on double-twill gold-and-white maple leaf is on the left sleeve with gold piping and a Canadian Olympic Committee logo twill patch is glued on the right sleeve. Rubberized maple leafs are applied around the collar. White twill surname letters are glued onto a sewn-on nameplate while the white-and-red twill numbers on sleeves and back are sewn on. The bold white twill "Canada" is glued on with gold piping and was to remind the world of Canada's hockey heritage while the gold piping on the badges and gold maple leaf on the shoulder was to remind the world of Canada's goal to win gold medals in Sochi.
Chosen third overall by Colorado in the 2009 NHL Draft, Duchene played three games for Canada in Sochi in 2014, including the gold medal final and the 1-0 semi-final win over the United States. He scored 23 goals in 71 games for the Avalanche in 2013-14, when he had career highs with 47 assists and 70 points. He also won gold for Canada at the 2015 and 2016 IIHF world championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, and silver at the 2017 world championship.
