Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Pioneers of the collegiate game, Harvard first iced a hockey team in 1898 and recorded the first intercollegiate game vs Brown – starting a rivalry recognized as the oldest continuing college hockey series in the US. Hailing from the early Crimson program and witnessing Ivy League action, we have a pair of antique one-piece sticks used in collegiate contests and saved for both posterity and as tangible trophies, with each marked with it’s important history. At similar lengths with approx. 43” shafts, each stick has had the blade and a portion of the lower shaft finished in deep crimson, with the inscriptions of “H 4 Y 0 Feb 11 1901 St Nicholas Rink NY” on one stick – only the second ever meeting between Harvard and Yale - along with “Harvard 4 Columbia 3 Jan 18 1902 St Nicolas Rink NY” over the other – with this the first ever meeting between these Ivy League giants.
As mentioned, each stick has had the blade and a portion of the lower shaft painted in red, with the Harvard/Yale stick stamped “Wilson” over the upper shaft for Harold A Wilson Sporting Goods (Toronto), while the Harvard/Columbia stick feature’s “XXX” stamped into the upper shaft. Both sticks exhibit heavy use, with considerable wear including chipping and loss to the underside of each blade, with the Harvard/Columbia stick showing a huge separation along the center of the blade that runs into the back heel section of the shaft. The Harvard/Yale stick also shows a thin crack that runs from the toe for a couple inches towards the center of the blade. Each stick sports at least four holes, with these originally made to facilitate display with inserted eyelet hooks.
