Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

Scarcity and intrigue to tempt you with here, with "Willards Chocolates Limited" appearing, along with the firm's Toronto address, on wrappers of Willard's Sports Nut Bar with which these fascinating cards were issued. Very infrequently offered in complete set form - this is the first set to ever land at our headquarters - the blank-backed cards pay tribute to a variety of "sports champions" including those from the world of baseball, hockey, football, boxing, golf, swimming, tennis, track & field, billiards and still more. A Babe Ruth card is most notable, the example here crease-free with toning and staining on the reverse and VG+ in our book. Side-to-side creases and a pencil mark on the back affect a Ty Cobb card (P-F), while VG is #2-Eddie Collins. Condition leaders are 13 crease-free EX-or-better cards with clean backs, highlighted by swimmer 14-Duke Kahamenoku (NM) and tennis player 11-Helen Wills (EX). The remainder average in the VG neighborhood, with a crease and/or corner/edge wear, to go along with varying degrees of toning/soiling on the backs. Hockey players, members of the Toronto Granites who captured the 1924 Olympic gold medal for Canada, are 43-Harry Watson (G), 45-Ernie Collett (G), 47-Hooley Smith (G) and 52-Dunc Munro (VG-EX). Johnny Weismuller is named "The Human Fish" on the front of his #13 card (VG), with golfer 20-Gene Sarazen (VG), tennis' 27-Bill Tilden (G (MC)) and Canadian Football Hall of Famer 53-Harry Batstone (VG-EX) among the other most notable. Other curious and lesser known champions contribute to a sensational multi-sport offering which, as a result of being issued by a Canadian manufacturer, is seen by hobbyists as being relatively rare.
