Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
The longest continuously operating member club of the AHL, the Hershey Bears were originally sponsored by chocolate giant Hershey and began play in 1932-33, with the club then known as the “Chocolate B’ars” in 1933-34, shortened to “B’ars” for 1934-36, and finally, the Bears after 1936. We have a Bears jersey that was worn by Dennis Owchar during the Calder Cup championship season of 1973-74, accompanied by 5 vintage Bears photos. A tattered "Cleveland Sport Goods Co” label remains affixed to the collar, with a second washed-out tag attached to the inside hem, with the vintage durene measuring-out to roughly a size 50. Styled with a detailed team crest with chain-stitched lettering, the off-white tie-neck has been accented with single brown twill sleeve and verso numbers, with custom-shortened sleeves also utilized. A signed LOA from Dennis Owchar will accompany.
Showing obvious heavy use, dark marks are visible over the lower front along with some spotting, with a small separation along the top of the team crest. The reverse numbers also exhibit a few loose areas and tears, with team repairs over each elbow. The accompanying photos include 3 black and white 8” x 10” images of Owchar in game action, a black and white 8” x 10” 1973-74 team photo with Owchar, and a colour 5 ½” x 9” 1973-74 oversized team photo postcard with Owchar.
Addendum; this game-worn jersey was worn in previous seasons by the Hershey Bears which switched to a white bar “Hershey” logo on their game-worn jerseys for the 1973-74 season. The continued to use the brown bar “Hershey” logo jerseys from previous seasons as practice jerseys in the 1973-74 season. This jersey was worn by Jim Wiley in 1972-73 and the jersey is photo-matched to a Hershey Bears media photo of Wiley to the black marks on the lower right corner of the team’s crest and to three black marks on the left elbow area. Wiley wore the #22 for the Bears in 1972-73, he switched to #18 for the 1973-74 season. Dennis Owchar wore this recycled jersey in practices during the 1973-74 season.
