Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Amazing and truly rare example of a vintage one-piece wooden shinny stick used in the less formal on-ice game played on skates that originated in Europe, most likely evolving from the Scottish game of “Shinty”. These "bandies" were fashioned from the lower branches of willow trees which grew in a curve upwards providing a perfect shape for a one-piece stick. The shinny stick offered here dates from the turn-of-the-century and features a round shaft and blade, with some chipping and wear to the underside. At roughly 34” from the top of the shaft to where the blade starts to bend, this example has been fashioned for a right hand shot, with the blade smoothed-down on the left side.
