Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
The first German-born player to win the Stanley Cup, Randy Gilhen enjoyed a lengthy professional career, appearing for a number of NHL clubs including Hartford, Winnipeg, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and others. We have a Penguins jersey that was worn by the Zweibrücken native in 1990-91, his second of two seasons in Pennsylvania. A Center-Ice label and sewn-down Maska tag with handwritten “48” sits along the collar, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with a textured knit Pens team crest, the white V-neck has been accented with oversized dual-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with the 41st NHL All-Star Game crest over the left shoulder. There are also traces of the Century Sports label that has been removed from the lower reverse hem. We should also note that during this era Pittsburgh would occasionally pull a jersey with retail (Center Ice) tagging and use it as a game jersey, which is the case here. Great game-wear is present including a number of dark marks over the lower front, with additional examples along with a small slit over the left sleeve.
