We have a wonderful signed Lord Byng handwritten letter, along with a print of Byng and photos of both the Lord and Lady. At 4 ½” x 7”, the note is dated 1905 and addressed to a “Shee”, with Byng adding a fabulous and bold fountain pen signature along the lower reverse. Penned on Bridge Hill Canterbury letterhead, the signature remains dark, with some slight discolouration along with a horizontal fold line to the note itself. The Byng print is 7 ½” x 9 ¾”, and it exhibits light wear, while the photo of Bungo is a 5” x 7” media example with editorial notations on the reverse, along with a few Reference Dept. dates of both 1917 and 1919. The photo also exhibits toning, yellowing and a large clipped bottom left corner. Lastly, the Lady Byng photo is 5” x 7 ½”, and it exhibits creasing including a large vertical example, with editorial notations on the reverse, along with a Reference Dept. date of Mar 14 1918.
Born of aristocratic British stock, Julian Byng, 1st Viscount Byng of Vimy was a distinguished officer rising to the eventual rank of field marshal, with the Eton College graduate also serving as the 12th Governor General of Canada. First awarded in 1925 and donated to the league by Lady Byng of Vimy, then–viceregal consort of Canada, the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability".
