With Canada winning their fourth-straight gold medal led by tournament scoring leader Jarome Iginla, the 1996 World Jr Championships took place in the US, with Sweden snatching up the silver and Russia the bronze. Hailing from the collection of longtime CHL and WHL president Ed Chynoweth and consigned by his direct family, we have a 1996 World Junior Championships Team Canada 10K gold ring that was presented to the important hockey administrator. Size 9 with a weight of 28 grams, a Hockey Canada logo is featured on the face encompassed by six clear simulated diamonds. The left shank lists Boston as the venue, with “Chynoweth” along with a CHL logo and the years of recent Team Canada wins. The inner band has the dates of the tournament engraved, along with “10K Intergold”. An LOA from the Chynoweth family will accompany.
Fairly heavy wear is present along the band from use, with a number of scratches and small gouges visible. The shanks also exhibit wear, with some grinding to the surface along the tableau. The ring would also benefit from a thorough cleaning. Chynoweth served as the president of the WHL from 1972-95 and president of the CHL from 1975-95. Passing from cancer in 2008, the WHL renamed its championship trophy the Ed Chynoweth Cup in his honour. Chynoweth was posthumously elected to the HOF as a builder late in 2008.
