Exquisitely stunning gold and diamond creation is breathtaking to hold and behold, and celebrates the Detroit Red Wings' first of two consecutive Stanley Cup triumphs under the guidance of hockey's all-time winningest coach, Scotty Bowman. After their record 62-win, 131-point regular season of 1995-96 was followed by a loss in the conference finals, the men in red and white returned to the Stanley Cup finals, like two seasons prior, and this time went "all the way!" Although Detroit's regular season point total dropped to 94 in '96-97, come playoff time the Red Wings ousted the Blues in six games, swept the Mighty Ducks in four and got past the Avalanche in six, setting up a finals showdown with the Flyers. Games one and two in Philadelphia saw the Wings come through with successive 4-2 victories, setting the stage for their return to Joe Louis Arena. A 6-1 win was followed by a 2-1 Cup-clincher, with Darren McCarty scoring what proved to be the winner at 13:02 of the second period on a spectacular individual effort. The wait was a long one in the Motor City, but Steve Yzerman finally got to hoist hockey's holy grail, something that no other Detroit team captain had done since 1955! Goaltender Mike Vernon, who sparkled in the post-season, posting a 16-4 record and a 1.76 goals-against-average, was deservedly awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. This is the spectacular ring that was presented to John Wharton, the team's head athletic trainer. Real diamonds are featured in the Red Wings logo which is set into a sea of smaller real diamonds, with strips of seven real diamonds at each side. An image of the Stanley Cup, the year, "Wharton" and "TR STAFF" are on one shank, with the team's name, crossed hockey sticks and the NHL logo on the other. Appearing on the interior of the size 8-1/2 ring, which weighs approximately 60 grams, is "14K". Moderate wear is exhibited, with numerous scratches, mainly at the back of the band and on the inside, along with a few small dings/dents on the inside edge, again, at the back of the band. The ring will come in an attractive presentation box, with a detailed jewelry appraisal document to accompany.
