Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
A paramount event that introduced the purely Canadian game of ice hockey to scholarly American Ivy Leaguers, seven American college students embarked on a cross-border trip late in 1894 to take on Canadian squads with 5 games scheduled. It’s safe to say that the game of their northern neighbours won the day, as the impressed college student returned home so enthusiastic about their new discovery that the first US intercollegiate game of hockey was organized and took place between Brown and Harvard, on Jan 19th 1898. Celebrating that momentous occasion and with a nod to posterity, a plaque was furnished to commemorate the historic 1898 contest, with the Brown Club of Boston presenting the offered plaque to Harvard in 1957, for installation within the newly constructed Donald C. Watson Rink.
At roughly 11” x 17 ½” and a hefty 11 lbs, the rectangular metal plaque features raised letter set amid a textured background, with “Harvard vs Brown” along with the date of the famous game and the day the plaque was presented, “February 7th 1957”. In beautiful original condition, most wear is present along the outer border, with just minor marks and blemishes present. A copy of a 1967 Sports Illustrated article regarding the 1898 game and plaque will be included. The American students that first made the trip north, along with baseball pioneer and sporting goods magnet George Wright of Wright & Ditson included Robert Wrenn, A.C. Foote, F.H. Clarkson, Malcom Chase, George Matteson, William Jones and Alexander Meiklejohn.
