Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
With well over a century of history, the famous Ottawa Football Club was re-christened the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1897, claiming the Dominion of Canada championship with an 11-1 victory over the University of Ottawa a year later. The results of the team's eight games in 1898 are inscribed on a spinning football which has been incorporated into the bottom section of the offered scarce pendant, originally presented to team members to commemorate their memorable season. With the team's red, white and black colors set in enamel, "Champions ‘98" along with the squad's bulldog mascot “Bill” grace the front, with "14K" and "Rosenthal" engraved on the reverse along with the original recipient “P. Jory”. Highly figural and exceptionally rare, 19th century football items seldom surface, especially historically important specimens representing Canada’s football heritage.
With just some minor surface wear along with a few small dings, the pendant survives in wonderful condition, with some light additional wear to the centralized text on the spinning football.
