Drafted in both the NHL and WHA in 1974, Danny Gare skated for 14 seasons in the NHL, with the majority of his career spent with both the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings. This Sabres captain’s jersey was worn by Gare in the late-1970s/early-1980s, circa 1979-81. Remnants of a detached Maska label are visible along the collar, with an embroidered Maska crest across the back bottom hem. Styled with the primary team crest that saw use from inception until 1995-96, the solid white V-neck has been accented with dual-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers along with the captain’s “C”, with additional team crests over each shoulder. A tie-style fight strap has also been utilized and remains intact. With a few dark marks present along with notable pilling, the jersey shows great use. There are also a few small holes, including on the lower front and over the left sleeve.
We should note that according to research the Sabres wore this style of jersey for the last part of the 1979-80 season and into the playoffs. The Sabres did not wear the Olympic patch during this end of the season/playoffs, and it is believed that the jerseys would have been used as practice examples and/or back-up jerseys the following 1980-81 season.
