Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
From the memorable and historic season that witnessed modern superstar netminder Ed Belfour surpass the immortal Terry Sawchuk for all-time career wins – a milestone placing Eddie the Eagle atop a list of the greatest ever - we have a Warwick mask worn while with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2005-06. Heavily photo-matched, the interior padding is present and accounted for including added velcro for the cloth forehead accessory, and dual-colour strapping to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics. The maker’s decals remain affixed to both sides of the interior, with Ed’s Trademark eagles wonderfully executed and gracing each side (with “Bishop-2003” inserted) along with his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design over the chin. The back head-piece has additional custom graphics showcasing a 1941 Willys for Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman Manitoba hometown. A signed LOA from Ed Belfour will accompany this highly desirable mask.
Great wear is present on the mask, with a few marks, abrasions and scratches, along with a couple cracks to the surface over the chin section. The two holes over the forehead to accommodate the face mask have been repaired/filled, with a few areas of surface loss over edges at the extremes of each ear section. Getty Images #55765496 and #55832420 (September 24th 2005 preseason game), as well as Getty Images #55966490 (October 14th 2005) and #56149348 (November 12th 2005) have all been matched to the chip and cracking pattern on the chin, and to the repaired holes over the forehead. The same wear/damage has also been matched to Getty Image #55974750 from an October 5th 2005 match against Ottawa in the first ever official shootout in NHL history. An original Warwick bag with graphics will accompany the mask.
