Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Considerable intrigue here, with desirable Canadiens and Maroons team photos totaling seven and joined by two of Canada’s 1936 Olympic team, as well as scarce Father Levesque Canadien and Maple Leaf Peewee teams. A triple-fold premium hockey game, on thick paper stock, is without its original cut-out “pucks” but is another scarcity, while nine individual player photos, including Ace Bailey and Frank Boucher pictures, are on original pale beige backings and are interestingly unnumbered. Over five dozen player photos are without their original backings and include duplication, with two each of Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat. A scarce King Clancy example is present, with beige paper across the upper back edge, with just glue residue affecting the rest. Condition is generally pleasing, with only a light bend or two spotted intermittently and very few with unsightly flaws. Please see our website for condition details of the team photos – this stash offers multiple possibilities.
The lowdown on the team photos is as follows. Father Levesque’s Maple Leaf Peewee team and the similar Canadien Peewee squad need to be re-glued to their original backings, with that of the former superior to the latter which exhibits creasing. There are two of picture #72 featuring Leveque’s “Six Stars”, with one of them having become un-glued but both rather attractive VG+ ensembles. Two Montreal Canadiens team photos are similar and unnumbered, with the year not identified, with one example black and white and the other sepia. They’re G-VG and joined by a “loose” 1938-39 team photo (#151 with a pinhole to report), along with a ’37-38 group shot (#107) that has two punch holes in the backing. Maroons team photos picture group shots from ’34-35 (VG-EX photo but no backing), ’36-37 (trimmed mat) and ’37-38 (nicest but with a pinhole at the top of the backing). Completing are two of the aforementioned 1936 Canadian Olympic team; one is black and white on its original backing (VG), while the other is sepia and loose. An instant collection or considerable break-up value awaits the high bidder.
