Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
Three-quarters of what constitutes a complete set of hockey subjects in Willard's Chocolates Sports Champions set of 56 multi-sport cards is offered here, with the images those of men who captured the Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in 1924 at the first Olympic Winter Games, held in Chamonix, France. The Toronto Granites represented Canada, with the card picturing goalie Ernie Collett graded VG 3 by SGC leading condition-wise and joined by those of scoring sensation and Hall of Famer Harry Watson (Good 2) and team captain Dunc Munro (A Auth). Apparent trimming looks to be the reason for the "Authentic" designation of the Munro card. The same holds true for a duplicate card of Watson, while a double of goaltender Collett is a Poor 1 example. After the Winnipeg Falcons had won gold when hockey was a demonstration sport at the 1920 Summer Games in Antwerp, Belgium, the Granites defended Canada's title by outscoring the opposition 132-3(!), including 47-3 in the medal round, which culminated with a 6-1 victory over the United States. A card of Hooley Smith is required to complete the Willard's hockey foursome.
