Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
This incredibly scarce and visually stunning group of 9 real photo postcards will have collectors and historians in awe, with the 1910-11 Stanley Cup champion Ottawa Senators featured, with the majority of images identical to the highly desirable and contemporary Sweet Caporal postcard set. The Senators defended the Stanley Cup twice in 1911, defeating challengers from Galt (7-4) and Port Arthur (14-4), with Marty Walsh scoring 10 goals in the latter contest. Laden with future Hall-of-Famers including Walsh along with goaltender Percy LeSueur, team captain Bruce Stuart and a young Jack Darragh, there are also postcards present in this collection for Fred Lake, Bruce Ridpath, Hamby Shore, Albert "Dubby" Kerr and Alex Currie. The sepia tone photos have outstanding clarity, with each player’s last name appearing in white, with each divided postal reverse filled in with interesting and relevant content. Combining the Senators status along with the absolutely stunning images and extreme rarity, this postcard set is arguably one of the most desirable in the entire hobby.
Regarding the aforementioned backs of the postcards which were all sent through the mail, but likely in letters since there are no stamps or postmarks. They are dated though, revealing that they were sent during February and early March to a certain "Miss" who lived on "Sussex St., City". French fountain pen handwriting on the back of the LeSueur card translates in part to "I believe you have seen this player in action and remember his name". Fred Lake's card reads in part "this little player on my card played a very good game Saturday night," while Dubby Kerr's card mentions "this completes your series of the Ottawa team". The majority of the postcards display extremely well, with light toning along with minor surface, edge and corner wear, with the Walsh postcard exhibiting a small crease. The Shore and Darragh examples also sport corner creases, with a larger 1 ½” crease over the lower portion of the LeSueur postcard. There is also a small edge tear visible near Percy’s right pad.
