Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
The most important signature in any advanced hockey collection, Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley served as Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893, at which time he famously donated the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup – later to be known as the Stanley Cup. We offer a signature cut signed as "Stanley" from the legendary politician. More desirable than the "Derby" signatures that occasionally surface which were penned after Lord Stanley's accession as the 16th Earl of Derby, this example appears to be a full "Fred Stanley" signature, but we need to note that we are not 100% sure the first word in the signature is "Fred", as it looks a bit different from his usually style signature. In stating this, we should also mention that we have absolutely no doubt regarding the "Stanley" portion of the signature, as it is a dead ringer for numerous examples we have handled previously. Penned on a small rectangular cut with full dimensions of approx 1 1/2" x 2", the signature is attractive and remains dark, and is a great candidate to be mounted with a pleasing image of the iconic hockey benefactor.
