Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Describing himself and an "above-average not-great player", proving that he was a modest fellow, Johnny Peirson would play a total of eleven (11) years in the National Hockey League between 1946-47 and 1957-58, all in Beantown as a member of the Boston Bruins. Selected to a pair of NHL All-Star contests in 1950 and 1951 respectively, Peirson would also help the Bruins to a trio of Stanley Cup Finals appearances over the course of his career as well, competing for the Cup in 1953, 1957 and 1958. A prolific goal scorer who would reach the 20 goal plateau in four (4) seasons during his career, Peirson also helped McGill University to a Queens Cup championship in 1946, their last until 2008. Offered here, we present this Boston Bruins jersey worn by Johnny between 1951 and 1954, a prolific time in his NHL career. A wool construction offering made by Jim McCarthy Athletic Equipment of Somerville, Massachusetts, both a brand label and a size "46" tag have been sewn on inside the reverse hem of the jersey, which measures out to roughly a modern size "44" after a quick check. Off-white in colour with black and yellow stripping accents over the sleeves, hem and shoulders, the front of the jersey is decorated with Boston's familiar spoked "B" team crest, which has been applied in a felt on felt construction, with the thick black “B” placed atop appearing embossed. Styled over the reverse with Peirson's number "23" in dual layer black-over-yellow felt numbers, the black layer has been sewn down with a rounded style sewing pattern. Of note, there is visible puckering to the inside of the team crest and back numbers, which don't show any signs of alterations. With some of the stitching seen around the edges of the back numbers having let go and causing them to become partially detached in some places, some of the stitching on the inside of the hem has also let go as well. Having started wearing this style of sweater during the 1951-52 season and keeping it around through the end of the 1954-55 regular season, it was in the 1955 playoffs that the B's started wearing new jerseys that had the front crest done in twill instead of felt. Peirson is the only player that wore the number "23" from 1951-52 to 1957-58, except in 1954-55 due to the fact that he did not play but there is nobody listed as having worn it during that one (1) season break. Showing its age and signs of heavy use throughout its entirety, the jersey shows excellent game-wear via at least ten (10) team repairs throughout the body and sleeves by our count, as well as heavy pilling over the entirety of the interior and exterior of the piece plus stick marks over the front and right sleeve and numerous red and blue coloured board paint transfers over the front, reverse, both sleeves and both shoulders. Finally, the jersey shows numerous unrepaired holes throughout its entirety that need to be mentioned for accuracy, heaviest over the right sleeve.
