With considerable time spent in the NHL including his first game where he accrued a record 48 penalty minutes, Jim Dorey was also a WHA star for all seven seasons of the league’s existence. We have a number of awards presented to the tough defenceman, originating from his time in the WHA. Mostly in the form of presentation mugs, we have examples for the first, second, third and sixth WHA All-Star Games, along with a pair of attractive plaques for both the first and second WHA All-Star Games. Next, there are Player of the Game awards, including a mounted game puck for a POTG award from 1973, along with a pewter mug given for the POTG for Feb 24th 1974. There is also a small plaque from Mayor Lawrence Cohen for the second WHA All-Star Game, a fan club mug from 1973, a Tulsa Ice Oiler booster club award from 1967-68 and more!
The 1st and 2nd WHA All-Star Game plaques are both roughly 10” x 12” give or take, with beautiful mounted medallions of generic players with laurel wreaths below. Plates along the bottom list the particulars, with both plaques showing their age, which includes some surface wear along with some light spotting to the plates. The previously mentioned All-Star Game mugs total 4, with lids with attractive WHA medallions along the top of the 3rd and 2nd All-Star Game examples. Other mugs include the fan club example from 1973, the Player of the Game example from 1974, a ceramic Jets mug with “award” along the bottom, a Royal Military College mug awarded to Dorey in 1970, a pair of plain steins with “Sport O’Keefe” along the lid and a few others. Most of the mugs remain in good condition, with varying degrees of wear to the surface and inscriptions, with all examples in desperate need of a cleaning. The POTG award from 1973 that features the mounted WHA puck shows wear along the plaque and wooden base, with the puck surviving in beautiful condition. Also included we have three medals from the 1990s that appear to originate from Jim’s son. A great collection, this group features a number of WHA awards that rarely come available for collectors.
