Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
A banner year for superstar Jean Ratelle, the summer of 1972 would witness the conclusion of his 12th season of NHL play, with the Quebec native setting a single season and career-high mark of 109 points over 63 games, a Rangers record that would stay intact for almost 35 years. A Lady Byng Trophy would also be garnered for his gentlemanly yet elegant play, with Jean set to embark on the paramount Summit Series that fall with his fellow Canadian icons, and the rest as they say, is history.
We are proud to present Jean Ratelle’s historically important 1972 Team Canada Summit Series alternate captain’s home jersey. Tricot Maska labeling sits affixed to the collar, along with the remnants of a second original tag. Styled with the iconic maple leaf ascending from the waistline along the garment’s front section just below the alternate’s “A” over the left breast, “18” appears on verso below “Canada”, with all identifiers constructed in matching single-layer white tackle twill. Custom-shortened sleeves and a shortened bottom hem (the hemmed-up waist can clearly be seen in photos of Jean wearing this uniform) has also been utilized on the heavy knit sweater, with the collar slightly “turned in” and sewn down just above the front neckline. The red durene material beneath the white maple leaf has also been cut away to lighten the garment, a trait common to other Team Canada gamers from the series.
Game-wear includes a few faint marks over the lower front, with a couple prominent stick marks over the upper left sleeve. There is also some very minor pilling to the collar, with a single small team repair within the white maple leaf just below the right breast. With bright and bold red and white colours along with a wonderfully pleasing overall aesthetic, this specimen is one of very few sweaters that can claim both HOF pedigree, along with use within arguably the most important hockey tournament the sport has ever witnessed. A signed LOA from Mr. Ratelle will accompany this HOF worthy prize.
