Jean Beliveau Foundation Auction

Highly significant and museum-worthy is this CCM Custom Pro model stick which helped Jean Beliveau make hockey history, the Canadiens leader becoming the NHL’s highest scoring center three days prior to Christmas, 1963. The inevitable happened against the Red Wings in Detroit, big Jean’s 325th regular season goal moving him past Nels Stewart of Montreal Maroons’ fame. The record-breaking goal came at 17:23 of the first period and opened the scoring, the Canadiens going on to beat Roger Crozier and the Wings 6-1. Bobby Rousseau had the distinction of helping Beliveau, drawing the lone assist on the goal. “Beliveau 4” is stamped to the front of the shaft here and below the icon’s standard knob tape job, done in black and finished off with white tape. Mr. Beliveau added “325 buts” in pencil to the side of the shaft, near the stamped “4”. A couple of time cracks (tip of the blade) and multiple black puck/stick marks are visible on the blade and lower shaft, but the stick remains solid, with half of the black accent stripes still present. Not offered in our February, 2005 Jean Beliveau auction, the stick is another tempting offering, used by a hockey giant. Jean Beliveau’s signed letter of authenticity will accompany this stirring “tool of the trade.”
