Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
A member of the long-defunct Pittsburgh Pirates for four of the five seasons of the team's existence, signing as a free agent in September 26, 1925, Harold "Baldy" Cotton served as team captain from 1926-29. He would later win a Stanley Cup with Toronto in 1931-32, as well as participate in the famous Ace Bailey Benefit Game. This Pirates contract hails from the 1925-26 season, the first for the Pirates in the NHL and the rookie season for Cotton. A Standard Player's Contract, it called for Cotton to earn $3500.00 for the season (just over $63,000.00 in 2024 dollars) which ran from October of 1925 to the middle of April 1926. Cotton and team owner Henry Townsend have signed in dark ink, with the signatures flawless. We should note that the contract wasn't written until November of 1925 when the NHL season was already underway, with Cotton playing his first game on December 5, 1925 vs Ottawa. The contract itself is especially well preserved with just the original fold lines.
