Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Soon to celebrate a century in the NHL, the Chicago Black Hawks are one of the most storied clubs all-time, with their Indian head uniforms considered one of the most attractive in the NHL. Having won a total of six (6) Stanley Cup championships in their illustrious history and also laying claim to numerous Hockey Hall of Fame inductees, offered here is this jersey worn by three (3) former Black Hawks between the period of 1979-80 and 1980-81 that includes Harold Phillipoff (1979-80), Ron Sedlbauer (1979-80 and 1980-81) and Florent Robidoux (1980-81). A heavyweight durene offering made by Coane of Philadelphia that is void of the brand and Gunzo's labeling that was once affixed to the inner collar, the jersey measures out to roughly a modern size "52" for its efforts. Decorated over the front of the jersey with Chicago's famed Indigenous head team crest that features beautifully done chain-stitched embroidery throughout, matching tomahawk alternate logo patches have been added over both sleeves as well and once again show the same chain-stitched detailing. Having been styled over the sleeves and verso with the number "19" in dual layer black-over-red "dazzle" tackle twill letters. Of note, many of the Coane jerseys worn during the 1979-80 season were likely recycled by Chicago into the 1980-81 season and had a name and/or number change, sometimes the same number but taken off and resewn. This is the case here as the original "19" was taken off of the reverse and then added back on in the shinier "dazzle" tackle twill numeral style, which was a bit larger than the originals that were in place. Additionally, the sleeve numbers are the original ones as worn in 1979-80 and were not removed between the two (2) years that these were worn. Retaining a garter style fight strap on the interior that is sewn through the "9" on the reverse, the "Robidoux" nameplate of a material matching that of the jersye itself is still in place over the upper reverse, with "Robidoux" spelt out in single layer black twill letters across it. Of note, evidence of the former "Phillipoff" and "Sedlbauer" nameplates can be seen over the upper reverse as well. Displaying excellent game-wear throughout its entirety including stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves, board burns over both sleeves, red board paint transfers over the reverse left hip and left sleeve, rubbing over the areas of both elbows, pilling throughout the interior, team repairs lower front and both sleeves and finally, heavy sweat and equipment stains throughout, the jersey is photo-matched to when Sedlbauer was wearing it on January 13th, 1980 vs Detroit to the black stick mark above the top black stripe on the lower front as well as to when Robidoux was wearing it on March 29th, 1981 vs Detroit to the placement of the nameplate in relation to the numbers on the reverse as well as to the unique nuances of the letters in the nameplate. A comprehensive LOA booklet from Global Vintage, which includes copies of the photo-matches, will accompany the piece.
