Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The United States Champion Jockey by earnings for 10 years, the legendary Willie Shoemaker won eleven Triple Crown races during his career - spanning four different decades - and he rode many significant horses including Northern Dancer, Buckpasser, Cicada, Damascus, Forego, Jaipur, John Henry, Silky Sullivan and Sword Dancer. Presented for Brookmeade Stable's Sword Dancer winning the 1959 Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile), we offer a sterling silver tray originally from the personal collection of Willie Shoemaker (The Met Mile is one of the most prestigious American races outside of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup). Oval-shaped at just over 9" x 13", and with a weight of 1.4 lbs, "New York racing Association The Metropolitan Belmont Park 1959 Won By Brookmeade Stable's Sword Dancer Jockey: Willie Shoemaker" is engraved in a combination of block and scripted letters. "Sterling" along with a hallmark is stamped to the underside, with the tray showing just very light surface oxidation and no dents or blemishes.
