Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019, Guy Carbonneau was one of the NHL’s premiere defensive forwards throughout the 1980s and 1990s, with the Frank J. Selke Trophy awarded to the Sept-Îles native in 1988, 1989, and 1992. Serving as the captain of the Canadiens captain from 1989-90 through the 1993-94 NHL season, leading them to a Cup in 1993 to go along with the first one that he helped Montreal to in 1986, Guy would add a third Stanley Cup championship to his resume in 1999 as a member of the Dallas Stars. A veteran of 1318 National Hockey League contests over the course of 19-years in the league, thirteen (13) of which were with Montreal, offered here is this Canadiens jersey worn by Carbonneau during the 1988-89 season. Made by CCM and sporting a washed out Maska Ultrafil label affixed to the inner collar, a CCM logo is embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front of the jersey with Montreal's famed "CH" team crest that has been administered in a layered tackle twill style, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Carbonneau's number "21" in dual layer white-over-blue tackle twill numerals. Having had "Carbonneau" spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse, the jersey measures out to between a size "48" and "50" and has had the fight strap cut from the interior. Signed by Carbonneau over the left breast with a black marker ink signature that displays with some fading from age, "Bonne Chance" is found above the autograph in matching ink and displays in the same condition. Exhibiting heavy game-wear throughout its entirety, including over fifty (50) team repairs strewn throughout the body and both sleeves, other battle scars include; stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves heavy pilling on the interior as well as the exterior over the lower reverse and both cuffs, board burns over both sleeves, coloured board paint transfers over both sleeves and lower reverse, also seen are small fabric snags throughout. Regarding the photo-match, the jersey has been matched to an image of Carbonneau taken during Montreal's December 22nd, 1988 contest against the Boston Bruins at the Boston Garden which shows a match to the clusters of repairs in the blue stripe around the right elbow, the image, while not the clearest, shows these repairs well as well as the correct placement of the "2" on the reverse and the nameplate over the upper reverse.
