Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Greg Malone’s awesome 1980-81 Pittsburgh Penguins game-worn alternate jersey was worn during the second half of that season. The Penguins wore these gold jerseys for the first time on January 7, 1981 against the New York Islanders a year after shedding their original blue-themed color scheme to adopt the gold, black and white colors of Pittsburgh’s other pro sports teams, the NFL’s Steelers and MLB’s Pirates. Malone’s game-worn jersey still has its Sandow SK and laundry instructions flag tags in the neck that exhibit expected fading from laundry cycles. The rubberized skating Penguin crest on the front remains intact and whole with light cracks in the white portion of the Penguins’ belly. Surname letters are spelled out in black and white double twill sewn on a mesh nameplate. Rubberized numbers on the back and both sleeves remain in great shape as does the Sandow SK logo screened on the right rear hem. There are small team repairs on each sleeve and more game wear shows in two big black marks on the left black, black marks and board burns on the sleeves, a mark through the bottom of the Penguins crest and marks on the front tail, including blue paint transfer on the left front just below the lower sleeve seam. A fantastic game-worn example of one of the NHL’s first sets of alternate jerseys.
