In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately, this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-73 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter. The following three pucks used by Gary Meehan to score a hat trick during the 1972-73 NHL season were won in a Hockey Diversified contest, and are accompanied by the original Registration Certificates, cover letter with envelope sent to the contest winner and follow-up letter with envelope, also sent to the contest winner.
Originating from the Dec 28, 1972 match vs the Black Hawks, the first goal of the hat trick was scored by Meehan at 12:44 of the third, assisted by Jim Lorentz. It was Meehan's 20th goal of the season, and 63rd of his career. The second goal of the hat trick was scored by Meehan at 15:52 of the third, assisted by Jim Lorentz. It was Meehan's 21st goal of the season, and 64th of his career. The final goal of the hat trick was scored by Meehan at 18:14 of the third on the power play, assisted by Steve Atkinson and Larry Hillman. It was Meehan's 22nd goal of the season and 65th of his career. Scoring seven unanswered goals in the second and third periods, the Sabres defeated the Black Hawks, 8-2. All three pucks have the date handwritten on the Goal Puck Program label, with each showing wear including heavy toning, while the Sabres rubberized logos are also quite dark. The certificates, letters and envelopes show light wear.
