Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Founded in 2023, the inaugural season of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) would see the founding six (6) teams play a shortened twenty-four (24) game schedule with Toronto, Minnesota, Montreal and Boston making the playoffs. Seeing the clubs from Boston and Minnesota completing in the Finals for the first crowning of the Walter Cup, Minnesota would knock off the crew from Beantown in the deciding fifth game to claim the 2024 Walter Cup championship. Offered here, we present this collection of five (5) pucks from the inaugural PWHL season that includes a mix of warm-up/game-used examples as well as souvenir slugs. Led off by a pair of souvenir/promotional pucks from the PWHL Draft that happened on September 18th, 2023, the group also includes an "Official Game Puck" used during the league's pre-season evaluation camp in Utica, New York that shows some minor wear to the logos on both sides as well as a few minor marks/abrasions. Finishing off the lot, included is a puck used during one of PWHL Boston's home games during the 2024 Playoffs that is in a similar condition state as the evaluation camp puck above while the last puck is one used during pre-game warm-ups during the 2024 Walter Cup Finals that shows minor wear via light surface wear and a couple minor marks/abrasions. Additionally, also included are various media passes from league events issued to Frank Brown and a pair of the commemorative "Day 1" tickets that were handed out at the league's inaugural game in Toronto. An excellent lot from the first year of unionized professional women's hockey in North America that hails directly from the personal collection of Frank Brown, don't miss out on these! A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. He was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
