Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Publishing his first paid hockey article in a New York Rangers game program in 1970 that earned him a total of fifty ($50) dollars, from there, Frank Brown began his career as a journalist for The Associated Press, typically covering the Montreal Canadiens. Under the leadership of Stan Fischler, Brown stated he learned the "courage of my convictions" after being handed Gordie Howe's phone number. Moving on to the New York Daily News in 1980, where he would remain until 1998, when he joined the National Hockey League as a communication executive, a position he would hold with the league until his retirement in 2018. Awarded the 2019 Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame, offered here from his personal collection, we present this collection of memorabilia pertaining to various NHL Winter Classics and other outdoor games that date from 2003 to 2022. Including items such as media passes/accreditations, programs, game pucks, newspapers and other items, the group is paced by a letter and Official Major League Baseball that has been signed by thirteen (13) members of the 2008-09 Chicago Blackhawks squad that played in the 2009 NHL Winter Classic, the second edition of the contest. Sporting some light and uneven toning throughout the ball, those that have signed the sphere in blue ballpoint pen ink include Kane, Toews, Sharp, Keith, Khabibulin, Ladd, Wisniewski, Huet, Sopel and others. Also including a pair of programs from the 2008 NHL Winter Classic and another from the 2010 Winter Classic, a pair of newspaper sections displaying images of Sid's shootout winning goal from the 2008 game are also included, along with game pucks from the 2008 Winter Classic (x2) and 2009 Winter Classic (x1). Also including a pair of matching promotional souvenir pucks from the 2009 Winter Classic, the rest of the lot includes various media passes/accreditations and tickets from various outdoor NHL events including Winter Classics, Heritage Classics, Stadium Series games, Centennial Classic and NHL100 Classic, the group presents with a variety of styles and sizes while most retain their original lanyard and display images of Brown over them. Accompanied by a Classic Auctions LOA, the items within the group are all in good condition or better while just light handling wear is observed throughout the group. Of note, some of the ticket stubs and paper items show things like edge and corner wear plus creases/folds in some cases.
